[sahughes-rpms 10] Time flies...

Quite some time has passed since my last posting.
I had in fact at one stage considered dismantling the RPM mailing list(s -
English and Japanese), but I have, however, been updating the RPM site and
its directories from time to time, adding new RPMs and updating existing
ones. These RPMs are mainly those that I have had reason to use myself or
have provided to clients.

Largely thanks to the Fedora Project (which is sponsored and heavily
supported by Red Hat), Red Hat's Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and
Fedora) RPMs are now of very high quality. They were also good in the days
of Red Hat Linux, but they are now made with more precision than they ever
were. This has also no doubt been enabled by the advancement of the RPM
packaging software itself. In addition to quality, the Fedora Project
produces an enormous amount of packages. I confirmed that there were 11417
in the most recent release, Fedora 10.
Amidst this, however, I have become all the more convinced recently that
custom RPMs are still sought after. An example of what has lead me to
believe so, is that even if it is not necessary to create an RPM package
from scratch, there are cases where it is convenient to be able to take
the most recent package from Fedora and use it in Red Hat Enterprise 4 or
5. There are also packages that indeed have issues that may affect some
usages or installations, and I make a point of fixing these myself when
they are apparent.
While my activity in this area is somewhat sporadic, it can be reasonably
substantial at times. I sometimes spend days at a time on this kind of
work, so I will try to post to this mailing list with a brief announcement
when I upload new/updated/ported packages.
I will be making RPM announcements in separate emails later tonight (JST).
Cheers,
Scott.
